The NBA’s Back for Another Unique Season
Just 71 days after the Los Angeles Lakers were crowned NBA Champion of the 2019-2020 season, the 2020-2021 NBA Season started last night, and every basketball fan is thanking the heavens above for it. Sure, the gap between the end of one season and the beginning of the next was shorter than ever before, but that doesn’t make that wait any easier. But you know what else won’t be any easier? Keeping all the players and staff safe.
Remember: We’re still living in a world affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. That means that people can still catch the virus at any time, and the best defense against it, a vaccine, is just beginning to be given to healthcare workers, meaning that NBA athletes are months away from getting it. Another factor that’ll make keeping players and staff safe is that there’s no more NBA Bubble. That’s right! Everyone’s playing at their home arenas this season (except for the Raptors, who’ll play in Tampa Bay this year).
Needless to say, this will be another unique NBA season. It’ll be a little more similar, but there’ll still be major differences. For instance, only seven out of the league’s 30 teams will allow a small number of fans (3,000-4,000 max) to attend games. Also, the season will only be 72 games long, instead of the customary 82, since the league wants to finish the NBA Finals before the Tokyo Olympics begin in July.
So, there’s a lot of changes and a lot of room for mistakes to be made and problems to be had. Already, the Houston Rockets are dealing with several players being put in quarantine for contact tracing reasons, and star James Harden is being investigated for flouting the league Health and Safety Guidelines, which could land him in quarantine as well. But that’s the bad news. So, what’s the good news?
The good news is that the NBA is back! Plain and simple, we get to watch professional basketball on TV again! And they got the season started just in time to continue to tradition of NBA Basketball on Christmas Day, which always makes this basketball fan feel the holiday cheer just a little bit more!
Here’s my advice: Buckle up. It’s going to be a wild ride this season.
