Giannis Antetokoumpo is on the fast track to being a Top 5 player
3 ½ years ago, a skinny, 18-year-old kid from Greece was drafted in the middle of the first round of the 2013 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. Coming into his rookie season, nobody expected anything particularly special from the kid. He simply looked too thin to compete in the physically demanding NBA. Fast forward to today and that skinny kid from Greece has become one of the NBA’s premier players. His name? Giannis Antetokoumpo.
What Antetokoumpo has done to make himself a success in the NBA is on par with the best transformations of a player in years. Now in his 4th season, Antetokoumpo has become a truly feared player, specifically because he does just about everything. Truthfully, he’s a 6’11” point guard. He’s incredibly mobile for his size and he’s built a ton of muscle to help him physically compete.
But Antetokoumpo’s true effect can be measured by what he’s doing in terms of production. As of right now, Giannis Antetokoumpo leads the Milwaukee Bucks in points, rebounds, assists, blocks, and steals. Again, he leads the team in all five major statistical categories. What’s more is that he ranks in the top 20 league-wide in all 5 categories. Since steals and blocks began to be tracked in the late 1970s, NO ONE has ever finished a season in the top 20 in all 5 major statistical categories. Simply put, Antetokoumpo is truly an all-around threat.
Fortunately for him, it seems that fans have taken note. Following the first release of NBA All-Star voting, Giannis Antetokoumpo is in line to start the All-Star Game for the Eastern Conference. This is obviously a no-brainer, but it’s momentous for the Bucks organization. No Bucks player has made the All-Star team since 2004 when Michael Redd was on the bench. Additionally, no Bucks player has started the game since Sidney Moncrief did in the 80s.
But the scariest thing about Antetokoumpo is that he’s only 22. That means that the only way to go is up. Seeing as he’s already one of the top players in the league, Giannis Antetokoumpo will become a Top 5 player in the NBA in seemingly no time.
