Chip Kelly’s Finally Gone!
It was announced following the 49ers’ Week 17 loss that head coach Chip Kelly, along with GM Trent Baalke, was fired effective immediately. This move is one that was probably predicted before the season even began, which is surprising considering that most head coaching hires don’t get that kind of negative public treatment right off the bat. Then again, this isn’t just any head coach. This is Chip Kelly.
Public opinion of Kelly has been negative for years, ever since the failure that was his stint coaching the Philadelphia Eagles. Once Kelly was fired by the Eagles, everyone was beyond surprised that he was hired by the San Francisco 49ers. The main thought was “if his brand of coaching didn’t work in Philadelphia, why on Earth would it work with an inferior team in San Francisco?” And therein lies the problem with Chip Kelly.
The fact of the matter is that he’s just not a good football coach. Over the years that he’s been in the NFL, he’s been panned by fans, sports pundits, and even his own players for being impersonal, Draconian, and overall clueless about how the pro game actually works. You see, his schemes worked very well at the University of Oregon, mainly because it was the college game. Compared to the NFL, college football is infinitely easier to coach in because you’re not dealing with professionals. I think that Kelly never truly understood this when he came into the league and the fact that he was able to stick around for so long is frankly a miracle.
