Aroldis Chapman: Catch or Controversy?
It’s been a couple of days since the news came out that the New York Yankees acquired superstar relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for four prospects. Chapman is well known for having an uncanny ability to throw harder than anyone else in Major League Baseball, which gives the Yankees arguably the most fearsome bullpen of any team in the league.
However, acquiring Chapman came with a catch. Authorities are currently investigating Chapman after he was accused by his girlfriend of domestic abuse. Though nothing is concrete yet, it obviously makes the situation of dealing with all of the negative publicity surrounding him a tough chore. But if any franchise knows how to deal with controversy well, it’s the New York Yankees.
The Yankees have had to deal with more than their fair share of negative media attention over the years (Steinbrenner, A-Rod, Clemens, etc.) and they’ve always found a way to deal with these issues better than most. With that in mind, dealing with whatever media firestorm that follows Chapman should be easy for Brian Cashman & Co.
The other part of the whole “Chapman to New York” story that will be interesting to look at is how it will affect the rest of the team. If Chapman manages to avoid any disciplinary action, it will open up the option for the Yankees to possibly use someone like Andrew Miller in a trade for a top-of-the-line starting pitcher. But that’s a story for another post…
